He didn’t seem threatened at all and seemed happy to pose. We've since learned he has quite the reputation at 21 years old. He's a bachelor now, no longer living in the herd. This time, we went out to see our son and take pictures. We went to dinner and then did some walking around and shooting here and there. Shortly after this picture was taken, the horses just walked away. I've been liberated in this new phase of life to pursue my love of photography.  For the last 30 years I've never been able to get out West as much as I wanted. One thing about getting older is that the beauty and peace found in nature becomes more appealing. I soon found myself in the vast, open and deserted prairies of Wyoming!There are only about 150 horses in 120,000 acres of wilderness! You can go days without seeing a horse. And they can run a lot faster than me... hard to catch!It's 110Fº in the day, (43 Cº!) and freezing cold at night. But I'm nothing if not patient, when it matters to me.We set up camp in a small unprotected tent in the middle of nowhere, at the mercy of the elements. True wild west.I was up until midnight, shooting the beautiful stars and Milky Way.. you could see millions of bright stars, far away from any city lights. It was truly magical. Chilling coyote howls swept across the plains, reminding us that we're not in Kansas anymore!The incredibly dry air swept through, making the cracked ground beneath my boots crunch with each step. The extremely dry air chapped our lips, so bad it took weeks of Burts Bees to recover from!The wind kicked up the dust and the air was thick with the smell of rich earth. My wife and I went to bed and woke up at the crack of dawn. The prairie was so flat that the entire sky was filled with the sun's red glow hours before you actually saw it come over the horizon.We rolled out of our tent to get our can of coffee, and get the morning started off right when  suddenly I felt something to my right, a shadow, a presence. I whipped around and came face to face with a wild horse not eight feet from me!We completely forgot about the taste of coffee, and we quietly followed the horse as it slowly walked away. We continued to gently follow at a distance. We didn't move more than 100 feet... when we spotted another horse coming from another direction, and then another horse. And then another one, and another, and another!It seemed like dozens of horses were all converging on this one spot!Suddenly a violent fight broke out!2 horses fought each-other over access to the watering hole!This happened a total of 5 times! No horse was seriously injured though and things calmed down seemingly as fast as they began. A total of 38 horses gathered to drink, harmoniously and peacefully after their brief skirmishes. I spent a total of 3 hours, burning through memory card after memory card, capturing unforgettable images that I know I will never get the chance to ever see again!These horses would walk right by us, as long as we simply stood our ground, they allowed our presence, and allowed us for hours to be part of their personal social circle! Baby horses would even fall asleep nearby, with their parents guarding over them as they slept.  Some of these images were so up close, personal, raw and real that I felt like at times I was watching a movie. It was getting late, and I knew I wanted to shoot the lights and buildings through the Manhattan Bridge. We walked there and I got set up; I'm thinking this will be a piece of cake. Not so! Cars were speeding by. People were walking. I had to be patient. And wait. And wait some more. On Christmas Eve 2021, I was on my way to the airport to pick up my son. I was heading west on I-40 and got off on the exit for Broadway. I turned north, drove to the river, and found a spot where I could pull off the road and got out to take this picture. There are those who will caution against assigning to animals traits that are knowingly human.  I don't  worry about that. All I know is, this group of wild horses left the larger group, ran together in the cool evening, and presented to us the occasional hug.  The setting sun left a beautiful orange hue in the sky, and the horses seemed to appreciate it. They ran together as one, enjoying the peace and serenity of the moment. My wife and I enjoyed it as well and realized few humans get to witness this. It was becoming increasingly difficult to leave a corporate sales job with benefits, retirement and a love of what I was doing. Then, Covid hit, and I was placed on furlough. Going crazy being cooped up in the house, my wife and I decided to take a road trip to Yellowstone. Along the way we stopped in Cody, Wyoming and found a section of land with wild horses. We spent three days wandering all over this 130,000-acre spread of land looking for these wild horses. It was a great adventure, especially believing I had a job to return to back home. Or could this be a twist of fate, giving me the freedom to pursue my photography full time? We did some research about wild horses. I learned they live in herds made up of a few mares, young colts, and a single dominant stallion. The stallion has to fight to keep his standing in the herd. As they get older, eventually they must leave the herd and live alone or with a couple of other old stallions. This stallion was out with 2 others, and you can see the scars and the bitten ears. Time, the elements, and fighting to retain his position has left him pretty beat up.  Standing there watching him come toward me, I felt that this horse and I shared something: we were both older and not sure of our futures in the world.  He confidently crept closer and closer, and although I wanted to stay put - or even walk toward him to share a moment - I knew I had to back up. Our worlds may overlap, but he is wild, and it was important and respectful to keep a safe distance. I took about 60 frames of this scene to get this perfect look from him in mid-step. A week later, I was going through the pictures when I was notified that I would be laid off. It was tough to hear but exciting to think about a new phase of life in photography. I felt a connection to this stallion as we’re both getting older - fighting and surviving. We were amazed at the sight of these beautiful birds soaring through the sky. The sun was shining and the breeze was blowing, making it a perfect day for bird watching. At sunset, the waves came in and the sand between my toes felt cold, wet, and refreshing. The ocean air smells salty and the seagulls are getting ready to settle down for the night. It was November of 2019, two years since my wife and I had moved away from the area. We missed it so much, and to find this mysterious 60-ft. tower was such a gift. As we talked to other onlookers, we discovered it was built in 1926 as an enclosed staircase down to the beach for a Los Angeles senator, William Brown.  Although there have always been tales of pirates' treasure, those stories were more fun that fact. Unfortunately, we also discovered that the tide would cover the beach within the hour making walking difficult, so I had to move fast. I actually took about 100 shots, some close up and others further back, to be sure I captured every element of this fantastic structure. It quickly became one of our favorite spots, especially at sunset. Few things provide such peace as the sights and sounds of the setting sun reflecting on the crashing waves.We would often drive down to Laguna Beach to watch the sun set, and it was always a beautiful experience. The colors of the sky as the sun disappeared would be so mesmerizing, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore was so soothing.We would often take walks on the beach, and it was always so peaceful and calming. Little did we know how amazing they would be, undomesticated, untamed and roaming free.There are only about 140 horses in 120,000 acres of wilderness! You can go days without seeing a horse. We set up camp in a small, unprotected tent in the middle of nowhere, at the mercy of the elements. I was up until midnight, shooting the beautiful stars and Milky Way. You could see millions of bright stars, far away from any city lights. It was truly magical. The night’s sleep, however, was NOT magical  My wife and I aren’t youngsters anymore, and it had been years since we’d tent camped. So, we bought the usual items: tent, air mattress, camp stove, etc. That first night we realized we hadn’t considered something very important: our weight difference! The night before we had stayed in a campground on our way to Wyoming, and that was the first time we used the mattress. Every time I moved, she rolled into me, and every time one of us got up (for the frequent restroom visits) the other sank to the ground. By morning, there was very little air in that mattress!Something else we didn’t know: Open air mattresses are not returnable! My wife is cheap (she says frugal), and she didn’t want to spend more money to get 2 separate twin mattresses; so we decided to pile up the blankets and sleeping bags and make us a cozy little bed. It was not cozy.We did our best to find an area without rocks or brush, but even the tiniest pebble can feel like o was being slowly stabbed in my back, in my leg, in my skull…. Everywhere! On top of that, we again had to get up for restroom trips. Now remember, we are the only humans in a vast desert. There were no restrooms, so we had to just squat wherever as we heard coyotes and wondered if rattlesnakes or other creatures would be up and about.  Thank goodness we survived each day and each night! And it would all be worth it.We had spent DAYS looking for horses to no avail, but unknown to us yet, this day would be different. We awoke the next morning well before the crack of dawn. The prairie was so flat that the entire sky was filled with the sun's red glow hours before you actually saw it come over the horizon.  The cool air helped to wake us as well, a welcome respite from the heat of the day. We started our day: got up, took a restroom break, and started the coffee. There’s just something special about the smell of coffee in the open air! That’s when it happened: I felt something to my right, a shadow, a presence.  I whipped around and came face to face with a wild horse not eight feet from me!We completely forgot about the taste of coffee, and we quietly followed the horse as it slowly walked away. We continued to gently follow at a distance. We didn't move more than 100 feet... when we spotted another horse coming from another direction, and then another horse. And then another one, and another, and another!It seemed like dozens of horses were all converging on this one spot. After days of looking for horses, we had unknowingly camped just 100 yards from a watering hole!!A total of 38 horses gathered to drink, and I spent about 3 hours, burning through memory card after memory card, capturing unforgettable images that I know I will never get the chance to ever see again!Here’s where this shot comes in. At one point, three horses walked right by us, as we stood motionless. We watched. I shot. My wife recorded. It took our breath away that we could be a part of their day, but they really didn’t even seem to notice.I recognized one of them instantly (the black and white one) - Washaki. I have shot him before.  Now Washaki has a reputation of getting in other stallions’ business. He is NOT well loved, but at this moment he was just minding his own business with 2 other horses. We kept watching and shooting, when into my field of view ran another stallion. A few years ago when we lived in California, whale watching was one of our favorite (cheap!) activities. On this day, as the sun began to set, our tour was coming to an end. I turned and saw a sailboat in the distance. We were treated to a peaceful, calm ocean with reflections that glistened in the fading light.
